Fire department tests fire hydrants

May 15, 2008 | 5:05 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The fire department will conduct annual tests of fire hydrants starting on Monday. The testing, which was postponed in response to recent water quality issues, will continue throughout the duration of May and June.

Firefighters will work close to the roadway, and the fire department requests that motorists exercise caution by slowing their speeds and being aware of large puddles of water that result from the testing.

Water may be discolored as a result of sediment build up, and residents are encouraged to run water for a few minutes if it does not appear clear and wait to run washing machines for several hours if hydrants are being tested in the area.

If water is discolored after it is allowed to run for a few minutes, residents should call the Columbia Water and Light Department at 874-6229.
