MU Lacrosse team looks to postseason

COLUMBIA — The Missouri men’s lacrosse club team has its regular season finale on Sunday. One player in particular is hoping the team’s postseason doesn’t end quickly.

If the team makes it out of the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference playoffs beginning May 2 in St. Charles, it will make the men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national tournament set for next month in Dallas, where goalie Sam Fosdick is from.

Fosdick started his lacrosse career in junior high in Dallas, when his school’s lacrosse team needed a goalie.

“I was the catcher on the baseball team at the time when I decided to try lacrosse,” Fosdick said.

He figured the two positions were similar, and being a baseball catcher would translate well into the lacrosse goalie position. He hasn’t stopped goaltending since.

The team will play Missouri University of Science and Technology at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Stankowksi Field and is looking to keep its momentum in the playoffs. It has won its past two games, a 22-2 victory over Washington University and a critical 10-5 conference win over Kansas.

With the league playoffs in St. Charles, a majority of the roster will be playing close to their hometowns in and around St. Louis. But if they go further, only Fosdick will be playing close to home. He is the only Texan on the roster.

“I came to Mizzou because I wanted to leave Texas,” Fosdick said, “but now I have the chance to play in front of people I grew up around.” “I think it would be fun.”

The semifinals of the lacrosse tournament will be held May 13 through 17 at Texas Stadium in Irving, a suburb of Dallas. It is a familiar place to Fosdick, who grew up attending Dallas Cowboys games there. In order to make the national tournament, Missouri will have to win the conference tournament because it is not likely to gain an at-large bid to the national tournament.
