COLUMBIA — The Hickman girls basketball team controlled the tempo and dominated Jefferson City in their first game of district play Wednesday night at Hickman. The Kewpies won 58-36.
Hickman, seeded No. 1 in the six-team Class 5, District 10 tournament and ranked No. 8 in the state by mosports.rivals.com, had a bye into the semifinal round.
Senior guard Yvonne Anderson led the Kewpies with 24 points in a game that was never close.
“She makes the game fun,” Hickman coach Tonya Mirts said of Anderson.
Hickman increased the pace of the game in the first half with a full-court press that disrupted Jefferson City from the start. Junior Chastity Prince hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, beating Jefferson City’s zone defense. Prince ended the game with 13 points.
In the second half, Hickman slowed the pace in order to bleed the clock and avoid a comeback.
Mirts said she isn’t worried about the pressure on her team.
“We’ve been there before,” she said.
Hickman lost in the semifinals of the state tournament last year, and ended the season with a win in the third-place game.
After playing only five home games this season, the Kewpies are hosting the district tournament for the first time in seven years.
