PrintCOLUMBIA — On Friday downtown businesses will have the opportunity to play host to a Columbia artist for the first Artrageous Friday of 2008.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at more than 15 different venues.
Each venue will have a different Columbia artist and activity for the public to watch. Attendees will get a chance to volunteer in demonstrations.
The Spare Parts Gallery has titled the activity its “Next to Last Hurrah.” The gallery will be hosting its last large events this year. It will host a smaller event, “Muck Sale,” on Feb. 1 and 2 featuring a variety of ceramic artists.
“Get down here now while you can, because we are closing,” said Jessie Lawson, one of the four partners of Spare Parts Gallery.
Lisa Bartlett, Stephanie Foley, Douglas Freeman and Lawson opened Spare Parts officially on May 1, 2007. Spare Parts held their unofficial opening event on April 27, 2007, in order to participate in their first Artrageous Friday.
“We had so many people inside that we couldn’t even move,” Lawson said. “It really gave us a chance to give us a focus for our planning.”
Although Spare Parts was only open for a short time, Lawson said it was fun, but unprofitable.
Spare Parts Gallery is trying to remain as active as they can before their official closing in the end of February.
“We are doing things and being as festive as possible. We want to be active up until Valentine’s Day because everyone wants something for Valentine’s day. After that we are going to begin our brisk process of closing,” Lawson said.
Other businesses participating in the event include Orr Street Studios, which is hosting an “ArtEdventure” called “Snowflake Mania” that allows participants to make their own paper snowflakes. Pen Point Paperie will provide Valentine card kits for the public. Audiences can view the displayed art or be walked through a step-by-step process on how it was created.
The next Artrageous Friday is scheduled for April 25.
