Print"Big Man on Campus” was the big event on campus Friday afternoon, as a couple of hundred MU students attended a casting call for an upcoming WB reality show.
MU, along with the University of Arizona and the University of Texas-Austin, is one of three potential campuses for the show. Casting director Luke Conklin describes the show as a college version of “The Bachelor” — without a marriage proposal at the end.
“It’s not ‘elimiDATE’ or ‘Blind Date’ or anything like that. We’re looking for two people to actually have a fairy tale romance,” Conklin said.
Conklin estimated that between 150 and 200 MU students tried out for the show. He said MU was chosen as a possible location because of its helpful administration and beautiful campus.
Students in search of romance and television stardom flocked to the casting call at Pershing Hall. The “Big Man on Campus” hopefuls had to fill out an application, get their picture taken and have a group interview. The students who stood out in the group interviews were individually interviewed.
“You can be the best looking guy, but if you don’t have personality, you’re definitely not great for TV, “ Conklin said.
The “Big Man on Campus” applicants answered several questions, including: Do you have any piercings? Would you be comfortable kissing on camera? When was the last time you cried, and why? And, have you ever kissed somebody of the same sex?
Junior Carlton Foust was a prospective cast member. “I’m here to meet the girl of my dreams,” he said. “Hopefully, it will work out. I’m pretty sure I’ll probably get this. With my good looks, I should get it.”
Senior Natalee Binkholder also went to the casting call but wasn’t sure if she wanted to be a part of the show. “I’m sort of deciding whether or not I really want to be on the show, but I really do want the show to be here at Mizzou, so I’m here to support it,” Binkholder said.
Conklin said the university locale will be decided this summer, and the show will be filmed in the fall to air sometime next year.
