For students at West Boulevard Elementary School, education is about more than classroom materials. Through activities like the Stand By Me Mentoring Program, students are connected with positive role models that help increase self-confidence and improve students’ educational experience.
All 4th and 5th grade students receive an adult mentor from the Columbia community who gives students extra, individual support. The mentor and student meet once a week and work through a set curriculum that includes character development.
“It’s a three-year program so they stay with them, {through}4th, 5th and 6th grade and what they are starting to see, because this is now the third year, is that mentors are saying well I’m not stopping I’m going to go to 7th with my student,” West Boulevard Vice Principal Peter Stiepleman said.
After being reconstituted three years ago, West Boulevard has worked to become a strong, neighborhood school parents are happy to send their children to. Through the Home Hour Program, teachers visit their students homes every week in order to get to know students and their families.
From the moment West Boulevard Elementary students walk through the door each morning, they are greeted with smiling faces and a positive, safe learning environment.
“We know a lot of kids don’t have the ritual in the morning of someone saying, ‘Have a good day,’ so our mission in the morning is to have every adult who is available at different stations greeting children,” Stiepleman said.
West Boulevard maintains a commitment to making each student realize that they can succeed and achieve any goal they set their mind to. Through developing relationships and positive reinforcements, the faculty and staff at West Boulevard hope to change lives.
“This place is filled with the most passionate people for education that I have ever worked with,” Stiepleman said.
