Peek inside Russell Boulevard Elementary School, and you may just see the city of Columbia in its students. Principle Ed Schumacher believes that Russell has a good mix of kids and is not to heavy one way or another when it comes to its students.
“You get to see every kind of child Columbia has here. Every child brings unique perspectives to the school environment,” says Principle Schumacher.
Technology at Russell involves the use of SMART Boards, palm pilots, and graphic organizers. The type of technology used depends on the age and grade level of the students, and is used when appropriate to enhance learning.
Enhanced learning also comes with good teaching techniques. Russell uses teaching techniques that meet the needs of students and allow for plenty of hands-on experience. The teachers focus on working cooperatively with others and multiple intelligence, which allows children to experience learning through different brain-based activities. They use things that they know are effective and are research-based, yet meet the needs of children.
Overall, the atmosphere of Russell Elementary is that of learning and success. The school’s mission is to believe, achieve and succeed for life, and Principle Schumacher believes that Russell’s atmosphere reflects that.
“We want children to believe in themselves because we do. We know that success leads to achievement, and achievement leads to success,” says Schumacher. “When you’re in the school you will see an atmosphere of believing in each other and setting kids up for success.”
