Principal Cindy Giovanini believes that New Haven Elementary is unique because the school is family oriented and small, with only 300 students, allowing everyone to know each other personally.
Walk into any classroom in New Haven and you will see a few things that make the elementary school special. The classroom structure is very low-key but has high expectations for kids, and is very student-engaged. Principal Giovanini says kids then rise to the occasion and live up to expectations.
New Haven is excited about the SMART Boards they have purchased, used to incorporate technology into the classrooms. The SMART Boards engage the kids, Principle Giovanini said opening windows to the outside world via the Internet.
One program New Haven offers for learning is a program that teaches students interviewing skills. They bring in senior citizens as well as people around the community for students to interview and videotape, and then they write a biography on what they learned about that person and their life. Many of the individuals students interview return to New Haven to continue participating in the program and interacting with the kids.
The teachers at New Haven are also one-of-a-kind. “Every teacher is unique within themselves,” said Principle Giovanini, “but they teach based on the needs of the kids.”
